Skills Boost: Getting Started with Researching Your Assignments (Online session) Online

This introductory session is designed to help you take the first steps in researching for your assignments. While there are many aspects to consider when tackling an assignment—such as understanding the task, formatting requirements, and word count—this class focuses specifically on how to find the information you need to support your ideas and arguments.

You’ll learn how to search for and identify relevant books, journal articles, conference papers, and other academic sources—collectively known as "literature"—that will form the foundation of your research. This process, known as literature searching, is a key academic skill that will support your success across many assignments.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

Identify the key stages in the literature searching process.
Locate specialist databases relevant to your subject area.
Use Boolean operators and other techniques to refine your search and retrieve more relevant results.
Apply filters such as field, date, and other limiters to narrow your search effectively.
Understand and interpret the search results and individual records you retrieve.
This session is ideal for students who are new to academic research or looking to strengthen their research skills.
